How to record student presentations – installing Kaltura ‘CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder’

Everyone with access to Blackboard at UWE has access to Kaltura by default. Kaltura is the system UWE uses for storing and publishing videos on Blackboard but Kaltura can also be used by staff and students to make recordings, making it ideal for when you’d like students to record a new presentation.

Kaltura is tightly integrated with Blackboard, which enables students to securely submit their recordings for assessment using Kaltura too. (Please note that students cannot use Panopto to make recordings, only staff have access to the recording functions in Panopto, nor should it be used for assessed presentations).

To make a new recording with Kaltura the first thing you (or your students) will need to do is install Kaltura ‘CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder’ onto your computer. Follow this short step-by-step video to install Kaltura. In this example we use the Chrome browser on a Windows PC but there is a version for Apple computers too, and you can use any browser.

Although the LIU works to support staff development, this video can be viewed by anyone and you are welcome to share this video with students if they need help installing this software.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact the Learning Innovation Unit to discuss any questions you may have about this guidance, or introducing Kaltura to your module or programme.
