Points to note
- Accessibility: Learning materials need to comply with UK accessibility legislation. It can sometimes be easier to create new materials than to try and edit existing materials that have a low accessibility score. Our Practical Guides for Improving Accessibility include all the information you need to help you with this.
- Copyright: Learning content needs to comply with copyright legislation. In addition to the Library’s pages on copyright and teaching, there are also copyright tips for teaching during COVID-19.
- Course copying from one module run to another: Our Copying content to a new module run 2020/21 page recommends selective copying instead of a full course copy.
Changes for 2020/21
After a soft-touch review process, endorsed by the Faculty’s Learning and Teaching Student Experience Executive committee (24 February 2020), here is a summary of the changes for 2020/21:
- Under Module Information, please use the FET Module Handbook Template 2020_21 (accessible) for this year. It is in an accessible format (using minimum font size and Word styles), and includes minor updates to both the content for students and to the staff guidance embedded within in.
- Under Learning Materials, please follow the guidance for Session Study Plans. It includes links to a Word Session Study Plan template (accessible) and also guidance on using the SSPs in Blackboard Lesson Plan template tool in Blackboard as an alternative to using the Word Session Study Plan template.
- Under Study Skills and Support, a new sub-section on support for International Students has been added.
The main menu remains the same as last year.

The purpose of the template
The purpose of the template is to provide a good starting point for module leaders setting up a module site and encourages good practice from the outset. The module template is to be used in conjunction with the following guiding principles, which are critical elements for effective communication with students.
- Currency and activity: Students respond best to environments which appear ‘live’. They will engage more readily with a learning environment if it is updated regularly, has immediately relevant information and encourages activity.
- Organisation and clarity: Feedback indicates that students value consistency in the layout of Blackboard sites; if it is the same across their modules they know where to find key information quickly. Information about the module should be easy to find and learning materials should be clearly organised and easy to navigate.
- Content and guidance: Any Blackboard site must be populated with good quality, accessible learning materials, but it is also important that learning materials are clearly labelled and instructions and guidance provided on how students should use the materials. Any materials used in a Blackboard site must also comply with copyright law.
