You probably know that your Panopto recordings are now captioned automatically. Unfortunately, there are no automatic transcripts, i.e. a simple script of what has been said without the timings included.
If you want to, you can create a transcript from the automated captions as follows.
Download the captions file
Go to the Settings in your recording and choose Captions, then click on the dropdown arrow under Available Captions and select ‘Download file’.
Process the file
You can use this online tool to strip the timings out of your caption file, leaving just the text.
Click on Choose File and navigate to your downloaded caption file. You may want to deselect the ‘Empty line between cues’ option. Then click on Extract Text. You can either download the text file, or simply view it and copy and paste it into a Word document.
Tidy it up
The text generated by the online tool will have paragraph breaks after each caption. You can remove these using the ‘Replace’ tool in Word.
Under ‘Find what:’ use ^p to search for paragraph marks (the ^ symbol is over the 6 on your keyboard, or go to More -> Special – > Paragraph Mark). In ‘Replace with:’ add in a space. Then click ‘Replace All’. This will prevent breaks in the middle of sentences and make it easier to read.
If you are providing a transcript for accessibility, it makes sense for it to be as digitally accessible as possible. Do take the time to format it, making sure the font is large enough and that there are suitable paragraph breaks. If it is a long transcript you may want to add in some headings to help students navigate through it.
As with any automatic captions, it will not be 100% accurate. It is up to you how much time you want to spend correcting the transcript, but if you are not going to make it 100% accurate it may be a good idea to put a disclaimer at the top to this effect.
Making it available
Think about where you will make the transcript available – it will not be attached to the recording as the captions are. You probably want to add it to your Blackboard course next to the link for the Panopto video.
