MArch 2 study trip to the capital of Italy
Five-day journey to Rome as part of our second-year design studio was an experience that enriched my academic journey. From the moment our group set foot in the Eternal City, the cobblestone streets, the symphony of Italian chatter, and the intoxicating aroma of fresh espresso and pastries in the air told us we were in for an amazing adventure.

Our itinerary was a blend of architectural marvels and design wonders, aimed at providing us with a practical understanding of our studies while immersing us in the rich tapestry of Roman culture. Each day unfolded like a meticulously crafted chapter of history, art, and camaraderie, leaving us in awe of the city’s timeless beauty.

The bond among classmates, always a vital part of our studio’s dynamic, grew stronger with every shared experience. Whether it was marvelling at the grandeur of the Colosseum, feeling minuscule within the vastness of St. Peter’s Basilica, or capturing the intricate details of the Pantheon’s dome, these experiences forged deeper connections among us. Laughter, debates, and contemplative silence over Rome’s ancient ruins and modern design innovations became the backdrop of our strengthened friendships.

The food, oh the food, was a revelation. Rome seduced our taste buds with flavours so vibrant and textures so divine, turning every meal into a memory. From the crispness of a morning cornetto dipped in a cappuccino to the rich, savoury layers of a traditional carbonara, each dish was a masterpiece. The simplicity of fresh, high-quality ingredients combined with centuries-old recipes made us realize why Italian cuisine is celebrated worldwide.
Falling in love with Rome was inevitable. It’s a city where the past and present coexist in harmonious contrast. Walking through the Roman Forum, we were transported back in time, imagining the bustling life of ancient Rome. Yet, a short stroll would bring us face-to-face with contemporary installations and modern design studios, showcasing Rome’s ability to inspire innovation while respecting tradition. The city’s vibrant street art, chic boutiques, and bustling markets highlighted its dynamic cultural scene, making it clear that Rome was not just a relic of the past but a living, breathing muse for creatives.

I took a part of Rome back home with me, not just in the form of souvenirs or photographs, but as a newfound inspiration and perspective. Rome taught me the importance of blending history with innovation, tradition with creativity. The city’s layers of history, its art, and architecture, have left an indelible mark on my approach to architecture. The flavours of its cuisine have enriched my palate and culinary curiosity, while the warmth of its people and the beauty of its streets have found a permanent place in my heart.

Reflecting on this trip, I realize it was more than just a field trip; it was a journey of personal and creative growth. Rome, with its eternal charm, practically transformed me, like every experience shapes us. It broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding of design, and reminded me of the beauty of connecting with people and cultures different from my own. This experience, encapsulated within five incredible days, has become a memorable experience in my creative journey.
